Before we see if Jasper can help me satisfy our itches, I got some more freebies from work!

dsc05167 < Greens + Chocolate Energy Bar… & I bought a new flavor (for me) because some co-workers rave about the Grape. Eh, so-so. Kombucha is “cheap” at $2.50 right now… who am I, shelling out $2.50 for a drink?! Cheaper than booze, I suppose & it still makes me feel BUZZIN‘!!!

So, this is what the bar looks like, outside & in:

dsc05169 dsc05170 dsc05175 it’s green from all the goodness in it! Seriously, some pretty awesome ingredients. It’s a little low in protein, but it’s not a “protein bar” (they have those), it’s an “energy bar.” 

Oh guess what? I finished 2 boxes of tea in the cupboard, so… I tried another brand’s Chai tea. Seriously, I love tea, but I’ve had better. I like TwiningsEarl Gray (Grey?), but this isn’t bad, especially all sweet & s’milky!

OKAY, so ya know what I was itchin’ for?! FRIED RICE!!! haha, I am sorry, but it’s really not unhealthy! Ingredients:

 

  • brown rice
  • mixed veggies
  • an egg
  • some spicy chili-Asian sauce
  • a touch of olive oil & Bragg’s

I also added cashews after I needed a little more *crunch* & substance. Hit the spot, wherever that may be.

Breaking the fast, x3

What is a girl to do, when her morning starts like this?:

an empty box of tea!!! Well, I don’t just have one, so I’ve got back-up. Normally, I choose a black tea in the morning, but I reached for something else instead, out of necessity & un-boredom (yes: un-boredom!)

So, yes, I am very fortunate to work where I do & I have a passion for what we do & sell (health food store!) I get a great discount, have met so many great people & learn a lot when I’m there. Sometimes I get free stuff that is about to expire by the sell-by date (still good to consume, just unable to sell without refunds!), or products that are special-ordered, but only, like, 2 people end up buying it, so we discontinue selling something. ANYWAY, last night was a lucky night for me!

Look what I left with: vans blondie bites & dsc05155 Jackpot?! Yeah! This stuff probably would have cost me almost $25, what do ya think? 

So, this morning I had some French Toast Sticks (not from France, though!) They look like this, out of the box: dsc05157 & this on a plate, with some Smart Balance, apple butter & cinnamon (no maple syrup, wah!) dsc05164

AND this group of all-stars: dsc05162 to make a lil’ “yogurt-mess” with an apple. Yes, I ate the Dannon full-fat Plain yogurt. It’s rich & creamy & deeeeelish! Not as tart as some lower-fat brands/kinds.

Now, you’re ready to start your day 3 TIMES, with 3 BREAKFASTS!!! I know all you bloggies love breakfast.

Hollerin’ Back ya’ll!

Hi, sugar-boogers! I have missed you. Since you’ve I’ve been gone (Kelly Clarkson?), I have been trying to comment on your blogs of interest- sorry if I’ve been so terribly unfriendly & distant. I want to feel the love again. I feel it for you; can we share it?! I also had my Spring Break & just laid-low. I went to the beach to get my tan on (& keep the blonde-ness up!), hung out with some friends, started running more, did some quality yoga (7 more classes on my magical pass!) & only worked for 2 of the days. I didn’t blog. So, I must have done something!

On this perhaps lucky day of St. Pat’s, I found a dollarHOLLER!

Other meals? Here’s a sweet potato gnocchi with Vodka cream sauce, green beans & a Boca Italian sausage (I bought everything & cooked/heated it myself. This is not homemade, as much as I wish I were just that good!):

I had an Indian packaged meal, too, from Tasty Bite: Kashmir Spinach. My awesomely-active-&-delicious-food-eating friend from Gliding Calm has eaten & reviewed this meal twice  here and here! …so I’ll let her reviews take the stage, because I agree that the “bulking with veggies” is necessary. I added green peppers, onions & eggplant & ate it with pita bread:

cookbook My nutritionist is Israeli & she lent it to me, noting some of her favorite (vegetarian) recipes… I made a Chickpea-Eggplant-Tomato stew & I added wheat berries & ate it with a pita with buttah’: stew < There it is!

^ wrap on a locally-made pita (don’t think it’s whole-wheat, but I do know it’s soft & short ingredient list!) stuffed with veggies & hummus (there may or may not have been more- I don’t remember, but it was tastttyyy!)

In order for me to get excited again about blogging (which I am! But, you know, it’s the whole “here’s-what-I’ve-been-up-to-lately” thing…), I made a different kind of oat breakfast. I’ve read about people putting an egg or egg whites in their oats, but I’ve never done it. I always sort of think it’ll scramble. Today I added one egg white at the end of cooking my oats (half oat- bran & half –meal), plus pumpkin, walnuts, s’milk & golden raisins: 

egg oats < see the little white-flecks? Any advice to make it more “custard-y” without actually baking it?! It was good, but I really didn’t taste much of a difference… oh well, maybe I missed something & will have to re-visit this technique!

ONE MORE THING: If anyone can tell me what this is, you get 10 points!

Morning Love (& a chocolate-y giveaway!)

I had some “3-grain” cereal this morning: oat bran, oatmeal & wheat berries, with an apple, cinnamon, walnuts & smilk. It had great texture:

3-grain Kath puts wheatberries in her morning cereal, & since I still have a plethora of these chewy babies, I thought I’d use ’em. I have yet to incorporate a “blended-puddin’-style” of my grains, a-la Katie , but SPEAKING OF this chocolate-covered gal, she is having a CHOCOLATE GIVEAWAY!!! Go to her new Wordpress blog-site & check it out to get a WHOLE FREAKIN’ CASE of Larabar’s Jocalat bars! a new-to-me (empty) flavor of Kombucha, Multi-Green & some Peanut-Ginger chews! If you like peanuts (*ahem, PB-lova’s!*) & you love ginger, you miiight just like these! More peanutty than other ginger chews I’ve tried, but still, yummm!

THANK YOU to everyone in their feedback with the header/blog! I haven’t contacted anyone because I’m sort of wondering if I should change the style of the blog. And since I have become “Orange Pop” I need to stick with that. I think I’ll add more features, such as “Story-time” about my job, “Tea-time” with something snazzy about that, maybe something with dogs & of course, FOOD-stuff!

This weekend, I’m not sure what I’m up to, other than the usual work tomorrow night. Today, it is absolutely BEAUTIFUL outside, so I’m thinking I’ll go to the library to get some books for my school paper, then head to the beach?! Oh yes, I’m soo lucky! Have a wonderful weekend. What are you all up to?

Also, I’m wondering about OILS. Which have what benefits, which fats, what’s best to cook with, & not to cook with. Now I’ve been using canola to bake, olive to pan-fry, sautee & marinate, & flaxseed for dressings, dips & cold-toppers mixed in yogurt & such too. Any suggestions or ideas or websites with info about these things? I’m looking into walnut, avocado, almond & others…

Changes & Attitudes & Contests

Jimmy Buffett, anyone?! (though I’m in a tropical climate, I am not a huge fan of “Cheeseburgers in Paradise” or anything of that nature!)

I need to change my heading picture because I am successfully off of java. It’s been 2 WEEKS! Also, it’s the same with artificial-ness. I can hardly believe it, based on the fact that I’ve been soo reliant on the 2 for beverages! At first, boy-oh-boy I wanted to pad my head with pillows it was pounding so hard. This lasted for probably 4 days-straight! Yikes…bikes! (movie reference, anyone?) I’d kill for something bubbly & flavorful, too. Instead, I drank a lot of water, Propel, Kombucha, & tea! I’d sweeten my tea with Agave or Stevia (at work. Isn’t it nice that a workplace has organic turbinado, date syrup, Agave, honey & Stevia as sweetener choices, instead of pink, blue, yellow & white packets?!) Some new tea:

ALSO, I met with a nutritionist last week, too, to get a look at my diet to see how I can add healthful foods, what I need more/less of & gain more structure. Basically, I love her style! She stresses (for me, right now, trying to gain a few pounds!): HIGH fat, carb, protein, as well as nutrient-dense foods with lots of vitamins & minerals! (I just wrote minterals) Whole Foods. Plant-based. I think everyone should feel good great about what they eat! 

I’m going NUTS! (…or I am a nut?)

With the combination of eliminating coffee, artificial sweeteners, & adding healthy fats & more food, in general, I feel SO GOOD. Not as tired, anymore, actually. Very energetic & positive. My skin is clearing & doesn’t seem as “rough” (looking or feeling). I eat at least every 3-hours Chocolate-Covered Vegan might call it eating like a “Hobbit!” I’m also incorporating more low-impact exercising (yoga, walking, body-weight exercises) & less gym-like cardio sessions! Britney Spears Elliptical, I’m no longer a slave for you!

We even looked at things like salad that I enjoy & saw how I can beef it up to make it more as a meal & not just vegetables. I’ve tried this & it is SO satisfying. Here are some recent combos:

#1:  veggies: spinach & mixed greens, tomato, carrots & red pepper; protein: edamame & goat cheese (some dairy in there, too); fat:  pumpkin seeds & flax oil… plus, the 3rd picture is what I accompanied it with: Triscuits (Rosemary & Olive Oil flavor= starch) with hummus (for fat & protein)

#2: veggies: spinach & greens, carrots, onion, red peppers, sprouts; protein: marinated tofu (with Annie’s Asian marinade); fat: avocado, pumpkin seeds, flax oil; alongside, I had some Wheat Thins with cheese (for protein & dairy) & salsa

Oh, & I got a new phone because mine would die during a 6-minute call, no matter what… & that’s a maximum! I call it the “Element of phones” because, like the car, Honda Element, it grows on you. It’s boxy (& foxy!). It’s odd. But functional! I reveal, to you, the BLITZ, from Verizon:

^ made for texting. It’s a bright blue color (I know it’s hard to tell here), & it’s the only color it comes in, otherwise, I’d get it in… hmm, orange, maybe?! YES, orange! My background is no longer a piece of a puzzle, like it shows here, but a bottle of Fanta orange pop. Surprised? (Oh, nutritionist, you would not like me! Except this has been cut, too… wah!) 

So, due to the fact I no longer consume coffee, I need a new header. My attitude has developed into spunky & laid-back, at the same time I guess, so… any cool ideas are welcomed!!! Also, I want to make a “Recipe” tab– any help on this is much appreciated, as well… you can send ideas on my comments OR here in an e-mail! Thanks for taking care of a clueless-sistah! 

***I’ll make this into a challenge: anyone who can come up with a good design, idea, or helpful tips will be taken into consideration, but I’ll choose a LUCKY person & send ya a prize (to be determined, by me). There are NO LOSERS, just bad ideas (kidding, you all have wonderful, creative ideas!!!). SO GET TO IT!!! I’ll leave this extended, until I decide to close it & find something I really want to RAVE ABOUT!***

The Ghost of Christmas past has come

We had Christmas Eve dinner at my aunt’s house (mom’s sis) after church, which was great. My aunt really gets into the holiday decorating and had this display up and kept adding to it, since September! It looked great & festive!

 Isn’t it just awesome?! Can you see the Grinch on the mountain (pic #1) & my aunt in the mirror (pic #2)?! She has a train going through, which is in motion in pic #4 and she made that cute little peppermint path! She’s worked hard on it- it’s great!

On Christmas day, we woke up to stockings & gifts at our house, then we went to my grandparents’ (Dad’s side of the family) to do the same & eat breakie. Breakfast was homemade quiche, mixed fruit salad, pastries, *ahem*sausage*ahem*, tomatoes, OJ & coffee. mmMmm… Only one of my sisters could come home for the holidays, so I reveal to you THEE. BEST. DECORATION. OF. OP’s. CHRISTMAS, who stood in for my other sis, who couldn’t be with us. Check “her” out, drinking some wine:

She’s made fun of that thing, since the day I brought IT home in 6th grade, 9 years ago… it’s not Christmas without it! We literally took pictures with (hmm) SISTER CRACKER as if it was really her. My dad ALWAYS reads ‘Twas the night before Christmas in bed on Christmas Eve, so we called her up, had her on speaker phone, and tucked the lil’ cracker in bed with us!!! (aawww) I think she got in more photos this Christmas than if she had actually been here… oh man- GOOD TIMES!

Some gifts: a great wild-pattern dress shipped from my sista’; an organic cotton long-sleeved tee (I also got the same brand gray bag that can hold the world in it!); some Nike shoes (& a gray half-zip Nike hoodie); salt + pepper shakers to add to my collection (a holiday one & the Wizard of Oz one- isn’t that one soo cool?!); my stocking from home; the obligatory tangerine & in that cute little cloth envelope… a Starbuck’s  gift card!

since I’ve mentioned food in all my other posts, I’ll add one to this: it was a gift from the neighbors, and I’m not quiiiite sure what it is, but I’ll describe what I think it is. It was like toffee/brittle covered in a thin layer of chocolate with almonds in it! sooo rich & buttery & dee-lishtoffee

I got spoiled for sure! I got so much more than I could need or want, aww, blessings!

So, yesterday I went grocery shopping at the health-food store/work, to re-stock my uncle’s pantry & fridge with some more yum-si-ness. (Bella is laying on my arm, so I keep misspelling things and pressing odd keys!)

Here are some boring staples: garbanzo beans, my favorite Annie’s salad dressing, & plain soy yogurt

Produce: I filled a bag full of salad greens from the salad bar (way cheaper & organic: a bag full, for about $1.50!), an avocado, Roma tomatoes, Sweet Clover sprouts, red bananas (I have some tangerines & apples still!)

…and some goodies I hardly ever get, or have never had, but was excited about: Nutiva hemp protein powder packet, 2 different trailmixes, 3 Betty Lou’s energy balls (tee-hee, I said “BALLS!”), a raw organic food bar, & some dark chocolate ginger

^ MORE goodies:  Ruth’s Chia Goodness cereal (Chia-pet for breakfast!), Food for Life  Genesis English muffins, crackers, & roasted garlic beets from the deli!

I brought my own bags like a good lil’ girl. My store donates 5 cents for every bag someone brings in, to a charity, which is different every month! I helped yesterday with 10 cents! I spent about $35 on that schtuff!

Later, I went to good ol’ Publix & picked up a bag of baby carrots, organic blue corn chips & a Luna sunrise bar: Strawberry flava’.

Yesterday, I went with my parents, sis, & grandparents (who loooove dogs) to see Marley and Me. Loved it! Adorable! I didn’t read the book, but it was sweet, none-the-less! 

Afterward, I met a friend to catch-up at Border’s. We used to meet up there in high school and take allllll the magazines we could carry to the kid’s area, look at them, talk, & put them back. Sorry, Border’s workers- guilty! We didn’t take mags this time because we had a lot to talk about in a little bit of time (because she met her mom afterward)…

You know WHY we had so much to talk about?! Well… 

…well, before that, here was a light dinner with some new goods:

^ a toasted Genesis English muffin with some Baba Ganouj hummus, sprouts, greens, & tomato. Also, a salad with carrots, sprouts, Newman’s Own honey mustard dressing. After I took it, I added some sunflower seeds to it. My tummy was acting weird, so something light was just what I needed. I had some of my favorite tea, too: Celestial Seasoning’s Honey Peach Ginger to soothe the tum-tum.

Okay- now, the good stuff:

Me, lil’ Miss Orange Poppity-Pop had a date! *GASP* I don’t have much dating experience because in high school, I was always so busy with sports & activities, that I just didn’t care much about that. But, I met him at work– he shops there all the time & eats in the deli whenever he can. Needless to say, he’s super-healthy & a total foodie! He’s also smart, cute, sweet…

We went to a raw/veg/vegan restaurant and got a few different things, tried each others’ food, shared dessert, talked the whole time, he showed me where he is workin‘, he drove me back with plans for something else in the works! We went out once before- met at a pub, actually (he’s not a “pub-guy” but met some old buddies there), and I thought it’d be awkward, but it totally wasn’t! His friends included me & I even recognized/knew some people that were there, too!

YIPPEE! He, like me, am not a night-owl, and he had a busy day today, so we’re not getting together tonight for the last time this year in 2008, but next year for sure! I’m going to dinner with my parents tonight and just layin’ low.

When I was little, my family would turn the clocks back a few hours so we wouldn’t be up so late… we’d bang pots-and-pans and light sparklers on roller blades at like 9 or 10 PM every year! HA! This year, it’s all about the true midnight!

*FUN FACT: this year is one second longer because the earth’s rotation is slowing… so enjoy your extra-second-longer year & have fun (& be safe) welcoming a new, fabulous year in 2009! (PEACE in 2009, as we always say!)

Beginning to look a lot like…

the Holidays (to not be religiously-biased) 

…even though the high will be 80 degrees on Christmas morning…

So, for my homemade gifts, I’ve decided against giving out the “Almond Joy” granola because I tasted it and it tasted… burnt. No one wants that, no matter how bad they were this year!!! I woke up yesterday morning on a mission: better granola, & something else homemade. What, may you ask? How very trendy of me to make biscotti!!! I looked up some recipes from V’con and other cookbooks and sort of varied it to my liking. I came out with my own, OrangePop variation! It’s fabulous, if I do say so myself! Healthy + Vegan + Delicious = a winning combination! 

For my 1st trick, I present…. GRANOLA:

^ this was the best, yet! I added nuts and dried fruit but I added the sliced almonds during the last 5 or so minutes because that’s where I got, um, *burned* last batch! Good move, me!

I packaged them like this, afterall:

dsc04023 with a little tag with the ingredients, added later. I used mostly organic ingredients from my health-food store (aka work) so people will know they’re adding wholesome goodness to their innards! 

I also made a ginger-sunflower seed version that was great, too!!!

I shall post these recipes, okay?!

Anywho, amongst all the baking and the house smelling ab-so-lutely divine, I also baked up a cake because my grandparents came over for dinner to see the house all decorated purrty for the holidays. It was a suuuper-easy recipe my mom had, so I whipped it up real quick. It was a lemon bundt cake with a cinnamon-sugar swirl. Here’s it in the making:
